From The Ground Up: Locking mentorship cohort

$325.00

A One-Month Locking Journey & Mentorship

From the Ground Up is rooted in something Anthony Edwards shared during a workshop I took with him in 2010: dance from our ancestors up.

That stayed with me.

For me, it became a reminder to never forget the people before us. To acknowledge my African roots, honor the people who passed the rhythm forward, and then allow all of that history to move outward through my own expression.

I’ve been in the cultural practice of Locking since I was a teenager. Over the years, I’ve gone through different eras of exploration, influence and identity. Anthony’s interpretation left a particular mark on me. Coming from London, he brought together his Afro-Caribbean roots, African American jazz and inspiration from the original Lockers to develop something distinctly his own.

That is the tradition I’m interested in carrying forward: knowing where something comes from while having the courage to be yourself.

Over four group sessions, we’ll explore Locking from the ground up through opening the body, rhythm patterns, traditions, vocabulary, character development, musicality, personal interpretation and freestyle. This isn’t about learning material simply to reproduce it. We’ll use the form to investigate how you move, what influences you, and what you want to say through it.

Each participant also receives one private session with me to go deeper into their individual practice and development.

The journey concludes with a final creative project. Students will translate what they discovered into a form of their choosing, such as a short film, photography series, written article, or another creative format we develop together.

4 Group Sessions + 1 Private Session
October 3, 17, 24 & 31
$325

From the Ground Up is about lineage, rhythm, identity and eventually adding yourself to the story.
